Learning of Christine Jorgensen while I was in high school had an enormous impact on my life. For the first time in my life, I knew it was possible to become a girl even if one had been born a boy. There was however one major obstacles — it had to be approved by a doctor. Whatever I may have told myself before or since, deep down I know I am not a transgender woman. I did not need to be a girl. I simply wanted to be a girl. For what would be about five decades, I kept telling myself the lie that I was transgender, that the operation was always an option. Now I still plan on getting the surgery but times have changed over the last fifty years — and should it happen it will be my choiice.
